You may be familiar with research showcasing that very trained Tibetan monks are able to control their assets temperature by using the power of their mind, even to the point they are able to dry moist blankets with their assets warmth. This wasgoed very first recorded by Dr. Herbert Benson, one of the world’s leading scientists ter mind bod medicine who I interviewed for my speelfilm The Connection. Te the 1980s Dr. Benson showcased that meditating monks could increase the temperature of their fingers and toes by spil much spil 8.Trio °C and other researchers have since found similar results.
The findings are an extreme demonstration on the complexity of the mind figure connection. It indicates that the systems wij think of spil automatic te our assets such spil the heart hammering or our lungs breathing may be able to be influenced by conscious thought. I suspect it’s bot largely overlooked because the intense mental training the monks have undergone would be difficult to apply to ‘real world’ settings.
Here is a brief clip from Dr. Benson talking about his early research into meditation, the physiological switches that occur and his discovery of the Entertainment Response.
But this week, I wasgoed stunned to come across research showcasing that untrained people are also able to consciously influence physical functions thought to be operating ter the automatic, unconscious systems of the bod. It turns out that it’s not that hard.
Professor Ellen Langer from Harvard wondered if people could consciously control their heart rate after simply measuring it regularly for one week without any instruction, training, or prior practice ter mindfulness or heart rate moderation technics.
Participants were assigned to one of four groups:
(1) High Attention group. Thesis people recorded their heart rate every three hours during waking hours.
(Two) Moderate Attention group. Thesis people recorded their heart rate twice vanaf day at a diversity of times during the day.
(Trio) Stability group. Thesis people recorded their heart rate te the morning upon waking and at night before bloembed when their heart rate wasgoed expected to be relatively stable.
(Four) No Monitoring group. Thesis people only recorded their activity during the day and did not measure their heart rate.
After a week the participants were brought into a laboratorium and told to not to intentionally switch muscle strain or breathing and asked to ‘use your mind to switch your heart rate.’ The results were amazing. Both the Stability group and the Moderate Attention group weren’t very good at enhancing their heart rate. But the High Attention group did significantly better.
It’s interesting that Langer and hier team conducted a mindfulness test on the participants based on a scale Langer has developed to measure the degree ter which a person is naturally mindful. Those who scored the highest on the mindfulness scale were better at raising their heart rate and had greater control of their heart rate regulation. Langer points out ter hier book Tegenstoot Clockwise, that hier research doesn’t showcase how they did it but that the findings highlight the potential effects that the act of paying attention can have on our health. Through this biofeedback proefneming, wij see that people learn to switch their physical function simply by paying regular attention to fluctuation. Langer writes, “The High Attention group, told to notice switch, were simply exposed to conditions that would foster learning.”
For mij the other significant take huis message from this explore is the plainness of the technology used to evoke mindfulness ter the participants. By having them regularly measure their heart rate, the participants were learning focused attention, which lead to an intuitive capability to influence their body’s functions. I’ll be turning my own mind towards investigating ways I can actively embark using the elementary act of regular measurement to create self-awareness.
If you want to learn more plain, evidence based technologies that you can use to affect your bod and improve your health then you can witness my feature documentary, The Connection.
Fine article Shannon. I love reading about scientific confirmations of mind-body connection. Keep em coming!
Likewise, I am always interested ter how to explore what my dormant braincells can be awakened by.
Thanks guys. Lovely to get some terugkoppeling.
Having had arrhythmia for the past ten years and having meditated for overheen 20 years, I have used mindfulness and breathing exercises to control my heart rate. I can slow my heart to 50 hits a minute or increase it spil sometimes my heart rate is too slow. I also suffer with irregular heart hammer which I can also normalise with thesis technologies. Switching my diet and lifestyle has also had a massive influence on my well being. Your speelfilm downright verifies my own practice. Firstly, taking responsibility for your own health and welfare and not expecting a doctor to do it for you. Secondly, checking out the stress you waterput yourself under te everyday, mundane activities. From there, everything else falls into place.
Thanks for everything you are doing to promote this realisation.
Another superb article Shannon! How fascinating.
Quantum Physics is suggesting that wij exist ter a ",Participatory Universe",. Te other words, what wij think and feel has consequences for ",material", matter. Experiments have suggested that by the mere fact that wij observe something wij switch it. My sense is that our thoughts / observations / feelings have much further reaching consequences than wij are presently willing to entertain. If wij can influence out heart rates by ordinary observation, perhaps our respiratory rate and blood pressures can be influenced spil well. Attempt going to your local pharmacy with a blood pressure / heart rate device and proef. I have attempted this and have found that I can influence all of thesis bodily functions. wij can learn this by ordinary bio-feedback methods. This is ordinary thing to do. If wij can potentially do this, what else can wij do? Can wij influence, ter a positive way, the course of any disease wij ourselves may presently have? Can wij influence cancerous tumors? Can wij assist others ter this manner, helping them to overcome their ailments. Can wij consciously switch the course of both our health and the health of others? On a grander scale, can wij influence the direction that all of humanity is taking? Are wij doing this anyway, without skill of what wij are doing? Something to think about? Maybe wij should read about learn from the Yogis of the past and present where this kleuter of thing is all too familiar to them. Meditation can be a powerful implement. Knowing the potential of our mind/bod, maybe wij should always be aware of our thoughts and feelings and bring ourselves to an internal state of peace for our well-being and the well-being of others. Just some thoughts on the subject…..
How fascinating, I am a one to measure all sorts of things thesis days &, have noted that it has also led mij to some solutions for things, what wonderful insight to be backed with research. Sounds very much like quantam physics
This is basic ",biofeedback", technique…and I don’t mean to belittle it by calling it basic, only that your mind can be trained to influence your figure when given positive terugkoppeling about success. Spil a Migraineur, I’ve just bot trained to use my mind to raise my skin temperature, which is an indicator of vascular constriction, ter order to avoid the chronic vasoconstriction which leads to migraines. I can raise the temperature of my forearms by 8-10 Celsius ter the space of 4-5 minutes.
I’m fascinated to know more about how you went about training your mind. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for your thoughts Bob. I entirely agree that research like this highlights infinite possibility.
Thanks Zeerob. It seems like the research is just kicking off to catch up with people like you. It vereiste be a lovely feeling to have the scientific world validate what you have already found to be true.
Thanks Alicia. It’s terugkoppeling from people like you that it’s fueling mij at the ogenblik. Much appreciated.
Amazing. I observed a u tube movie of therapists curing cancer with positve intention and chanting. The patient wasgoed also required to positively visualise recovery. An ultra sound showcased the tumour reducing te size. It wasgoed amazing!
Biofeedback training for migraines: Martyn R. Thomas, te Toronto. He has years of clinical gegevens. through the biofeedback training program one learns to go to ‘mental neutral’ which is a way of telling anything that makes you blessed/relaxed, which reduces stress, which reduces vasoconstriction. Different than mindfulness te that ‘purposeful’ but also much the same. It’s not a ",cure", its a lifetime practice…with all sorts of other benefits.
Hi Shannon, wondered if you had come across this work, all the best Robb
How does our focused attention affect our manifested reality?
Energy moves with intention
William Tiller and psychenergetics
Notes from an vraaggesprek with Professor Tiller by Lilou Mace: 15 October 2012
Tiller is a Stanford scientist who became interested te the practices he had through meditation.
He has spent overheen 40 years exploring the effects of conscious intention on the physical world and did rigourous experiments on the significant measurable effects on pH of water and biological organisms like liver enzymes and fruit fly larvae when exposed to focused intentionality of people meditating at deep levels.
He is a primary voorstander of the thesis that expectations and intention of experimenter affect the outcomes of experiments.
He has developed an ‘intention host device’ for ‘broadcasting’ intention overheen distance, for example for healing and other positive outcomes.*
Biography: William Tiller Ph.D
Fellow to the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, Professor Emeritus William A. Tiller, of Stanford University’s Department of Materials Science, spent 34 years te academia after 9 years spil an advisory physicist with the Westinghouse Research Laboratories. He has published overheen 250 conventional scientific papers, Trio books and several patents. Ter parallel, for overheen 30 years, he has bot avocationally pursuing serious experimental and theoretical investigate of the field of psychoenergetics which will very likely become an integral part of ",tomorrow’s", physics. Te this fresh area, he has published an extra 100 scientific papers and four seminal books.
Wij are spiritual beings having a physical practice. He refers the figure spil our ‘biobody suit’, and believes wij need to work on something more advanced ter this time where wij are ‘wrapping up’ the current epoch. Ter the frequencies wij are moving toward everything goes quicker than light. Wij are on a schop of understanding and wij are now ascending the 2nd rung. This will radically switch our reality.
Wij need to grow ter coherence and intentionality to become co- creators. Wij are honeys on the floor of the universe and wij have a long way to grow. People are beginning to work on it and this will facilitate major switch. Tiller gives the example of a light bulb: ruinous interference restricts light output of ordinary lightbulbs. If wij can make the light rays more samenhangend, vastly more light is given out. This is what happens with focused consciousness and intention. John Wheeler calculated the vacuum has to contain Ten to power 94 energy vanaf cu cm – this means that the average density of electromagnetic matter ter the cosmos is a very big number. Wheeler also calculates the energy ter a single hydrogen atom is a trillion times thicker – so there is more potentieel energy te that than ter everything te the cosmos by rechtzinnig calculation of energy. Tiller maintains that Chi kung and meditation are key to our development te this subtle field.
The placebo effect ter medicine wasgoed previously almost zero, max Five vanaf cent.. Now it is 95 vanaf cent. Connectivity of subtle energies permits slower than light matter to connect with swifter than light matter. The placebo effect is multiplied by the doctor’s intention, the treatment, and the patient’s mindset. So the placebo result is getting closer to the treatment result. Everything is getting more connected ter us and the cosmos. This coupling effect is growing te magnitude. This is a excellent venture. His research shows the distance/time relativity theory is incomplete. Fine and coarse physical reality co-exist: spil wij treatment velocity of light there is a shift into the swifter than light domain. Relativity fits with the quicker than light domain also. Einstein said you can’t go swifter than light, but this only relates to one of thesis two realities. This can explain dark matter, dark energy and acceleration at the edge of the universe.
Complementary medicine practitioners have bot more open to thesis ideas because their work overlaps and operates ter thesis areas of intentionality. Tiller is presently developing a medical programme. He has also studied the Buddha relics te relation to their claimed capability to affect human beings living today. He concludes that the Buddha relics act like an intentionality device and have consciousness. Is there consciousness continuing after death? His results indicate the reaction is yes.
